My Take on Stitch Fix

Well, if you haven't already tried it, I'm sure most of you have heard about the newest craze - Stitch Fix!  I have been curious for quite awhile, and even though I know what happened to the cat, I still had to try it for myself.  I was quite skeptical, and surely didn’t want to throw $20 down the tubes (stylist fee that goes toward any purchase you keep).  Those of you who have heard me speak know how particular I am about color, fit and style.  Okay, and a bit of a control freak who likes to shop!  I’m also a bargain shopper at heart, and didn’t want to break the bank when I’m accustomed to my TJ prices!

So, Stitch Fix is not the first shopping service I’ve tried, but I have to say it is the best!  I have been so pleasantly surprised!  The colors have been spot on, the fit has been shockingly good and they seem to have hit my style pretty dog gone close.  For me, this is not a substitute for shopping (less I shoot my business in the foot!) but a great way to mix up your closet if you’re stuck in a rut, or to help find some quality investment pieces you wouldn't normally find locally.  However, if you hate to shop, and don’t have the time, I can honestly see how this could be a great fit every month.  I recently received my third shipment, and each time it gets better.  It’s so refreshing to have a service with no gimmicks, automatic shipments or charges. So, here’s what I’ve learned..

-          The more specific you are, the better
-          The cheapest price points are $30-50 for tops
-          Lots of blousy/silky long tops, which probably helps them fit the masses.  Make sure the fit is perfect and the length is flattering people! Bigger and baggier is definitely not always better!
-          I’m still trying to figure out how they’re making money

-          Don’t settle and regret, just send it back.  There’s always next time!

The pic above is most of the items I've kept from my shipments to date.  You'll be seeing these, plus
a couple more in my facebook and instagram pics (reallife.realstyle) coming up soon!  If you'd like to

Cozy Boyfriend Cardigans and How to Wear Them

Cozy Boyfriend Cardigans

Abercrombie Fitch oversized cardigan / Piperlime navy top / Madewell zip front topOld Navy v neck top

Brrrr!  One of my favorite ways to stay cozy with this frigid weather is a cozy boyfriend cardigan.  It's important to wear your base layer at a different length then your cardigan to help give you a bit of shape and to prevent the frump!  Below is a peek at one way I styled my boyfriend cardi last week. I wore a silk shirt underneath to step it up a notch and a long enough shirt and cardi to cover not only my back side, but the widest part of my legs/thighs, as well.  Don't forget to follow me on facebook and instagram at reallife.realstyle to see more everyday outfit posts.

Christmas Wear

Christmas Wear

LOFT top / Banana Republic black jacket / Skinny jeans / Gap slip on boots / BaubleBar gold earrings / Fossil jewelry / Ralph Lauren scarf

Tartan is a big trend this winter and I can't think of a more perfect time to wear it then Christmas!  For a more conservative and dressy look swap out the distressed jeans for a nice dark pair and wear with knee high black boots or healed booties.

Do you have everything crossed off your list?  There's still time to email me and order your last minute Real Life. Real Style gift certificate, katysteenwyk@gmail.com!  My shopping is complete and now it's time for operation Christmas wrap.  Does anyone else go nuts when your kids want to open up every single roll of wrap and you're like no, we have to use the three that are open first!  Pet peeve of mine to have 8 open rolls of wrapping paper.  Ok, coming down from my soap box now! Happy wrapping everyone!

Fair Isle Sweaters

Fair Isle Sweaters

Kensie top /  Fair isle sweater / Abercrombie Fitch fair isle sweater
Tommy Hilfiger crew neck pullover sweater  / Boden fair isle sweater /  Turtle neck sweater

If you've been out and about I'm sure you've notice that fair isle has made a comeback for this winter.  Side bar, where did that name come from?  I'll have to google it.  So, I thought I would share a few of my favorites here.  Everything from traditional fair isle to the modernized twists.  I have to say that I do love the look and am glad to see it's back, call me nostalgic. I'm swooning over the turtleneck version from the Gap. Maybe I'll get lucky in an after Christmas sale, if there's any left!

Don't forget that Real Life. Real Style gift certificates make a perfect gift for that special someone on your Christmas list.  Email me at katysteenwyk@gmail.com and I'll take care of the rest!  Happy Shopping!

Lounging Around

Lounging Around

American Eagle sweatshirt / Madewell black stretch legging / SOREL bootsshoulder bag / Merrell socks / Tortoise Texture Links

Lounge wear is definitely having it's moment, isn't it?  And honestly, I sometimes look at the price tags and think really?  You want how much for clothes I'm going to wear to work out, or to lay around the house?  I remember a day when our old stained, faded, worn out clothes would be used for those occasions, but now we pay just as much for bumming around clothes as we do for sweaters and dresses.  Crazy!  Ok, I'm stepping off my soapbox.  I actually do love today's comfy, but pulled together look for running out and about.
