Casual New Year's

Casual New Year's

top
sweater jacket
skinny pants
knee high heel boots
jewelry

If you're a little sequined out here's a great chic, but casual look for New Year's.  Mix together different neutrals such as this cream, grey and burgendy to create a modern, updated look.  Notice how I paired what would normally be a dressy tie front blouse with a more casual, chunky sweater jacket?  Very fun.

LBD for Christmas

LBD for Christmas

LOFT long sleeve dress
ALDO shoes
Dorothy Perkins black pumps
Zara genuine leather handbag
Stella & Dot stella dot jewelry
C. Wonder wide belt

Are you too busy making all of your last minute preparations to think about what you're going to wear for all your Christmas festivities? Do not be afraid!  I always tell my clients there's nothing like shopping in your own closet.  Do you own a LBD (little black dress)?  You only need a few fun accessories to get yourself holiday ready.  How about a fun belt, statement earrings, or necklace?  By the way, pick the earrings or necklace, not both.  Maybe a fun pair of pumps, or a load of arm candy?  Don't forget some red lips and nails, and you're ready to celebrate in style.

Maternity Christmas

Maternity Christmas

Mango cardigan
dress
knit tight
heels
drop earrings

Well, I've a little extra time on my hands the last couple days since I've had sick kiddos at home.  Translated means I've had more time to put together outfit posts.  On the flip side my Christmas shopping isn't done, but at least I've had more time to post, right?!

This maternity outfit is a lot cuter than what I wore when I was pregnant during Christmas, back in the day.  I remember wearing black velvet bib overalls with a red blouse underneath.  Oh my, I thought I looked so cute.

p.s. This dress would also be cute with leggings and boots underneath to dress it down a bit.

Casual Fur

Casual Fur

 Daytrip
Hollister Co. light wash jeans
socks
strappy boots
 jewelry
scarve
Essie

Fur is hot, hot, hot this season.  My clients are not always sure how to wear it, so here's a real modern, youthful way to wear a fur vest.  Just beware, a vest like this does add bulk to your frame, so it's not for every one, especially if you don't want to look like the abominable snowman! Although, the shorter length on this vest does help.  The knee socks are meant to be slouched down to look like leg warmers with these shorter moto boots. The light wash jean keeps the look super casual, and the plaid scarf adds that pinch of Christmas cheer.

I can't believe Christmas is only six days away.  I'm really behind the eight ball this year and don't even have a wraped gift under my tree (or my shopping done, for that matter!)  Well, I suppose there's no time like the present (get it?!) so I better get cracking! Happy Wednesday everyone!

A Little Sparkle

A Little Sparkle

 Embellished Shoulder Pullover
pants
platform boots
gold clutch
gold bracelet watch
gold earrings

Who doesn't love a little, or a lot of sparkle for the holidays?!  If you have narrow shoulders  this would be a great look for you.  Beware if you have broad shoulders, emphasizing them with sequins will only make them appear broader.

Cozy Christmas

Cozy Christmas

cable knit sweater
high waisted skinny jeans
tan boots
messenger bag
white pearl earrings
leather belt

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas over in my neck of the woods, as the snow flurries floated down this morning.  It sure makes we want to crank up the Christmas tunes and slip into something nice and cozy, how about you? May this cozy outfit inspire you as you head out to finish up your shopping!

Festive for the Office

Festive for the Office

Blouse
sparkly top
pants
wedge heels
python handbag
Stella & Dot

I love this office look because it is versatile enough to wear to work, to an after work party, and even after the holidays to add a little fun and sparkle to those long, dreary days of winter. Bonus - here's a way to wear a Peter Pan collar for those of us who don't quite have the body type to pull off the real deal. =)

Plus Size - Holidays

Plus Size - Holidays

Plus size top
scoop neck top
plus coat
slim pants
ASOS pearl bead necklace
Cameo jewelry

It's time to kick off a month full of holiday looks with this monochromatic plus size outfit. Can you believe this sweater is from Wal-Mart?! Score! The pieces in this outfit are all great wardrobe staples that can be worn many different ways.

If you need help finding just the right look for your upcoming holiday festivities email me at kate@steenwykbuilders.com.  I've also been playing Santa, dropping off lots of little gift certificates to put under the tree!  Let me know if you have a special someone you'd like to give the gift of Real Life. Winter White

Winter White

polka dot sweater
skinny leg pants
high heels
leather clutch handbag
pieces scarve
Earrings

I love the idea of winter white pants for, go figure, winter!  We're definitely seeing lots of in the stores this season, in everything from corduroy to dress pants and even jeans. I think winter white pants are a great way to mix up the boring routine of denim or black dress pants.  Of course, the only caveat is be careful not to get winter slop all over them when walking around outside. They are best suited for non sloppy days or minimal parking lot exposure. =)

Thanksgiving Wear - Dressed Up Version

Thanksgiving Wear - Dressed Up Version

retro shirt
jacket
pants
high heels
stella dot jewelry
Stella & Dot

Here's the first of a few Thanksgiving looks to inspire you!  This is a great outfit for when you'd like to dress up a bit, but don't want to be too overdressed. A great conservative chic look, but the burgundy cords give it a modern twist.

Peter Pan Collar

Peter Pan Collar

peter pan collar shirt

Has anyone else noticed all the peter pan collar shirts out there this fall?  I do love me a peter pan collar, but unfortunately as a large busted, broad shouldered woman the peter pan collar is not for me.  This look works best on women with narrow shoulders and smaller busts, who have either a pear shape or boyish shape figure.  So, I'll settle for living vicariously through all of you that look fantastic wearing a peter pan collared top.

I had the awesome privilege of speaking to a MOPS group down in Chicago this week about all things related to personal style, as well as true beauty that comes from within.  What a great group of moms!  Thanks for having me ladies!

Just a reminder that Christmas is fast approaching! Don't forget that gift certificates to Real Life. Real Style make a great gift for yourself, your bff, sister, mom or even mother-in-law! Pop me an email and I'll take care of the rest.  Have a great weekend!  Look for some Thanksgiving outfits ideas next week on the blog.

Fall Boots

Fall Boots

Calvin Klein tall buckle boots
Sperry Top-Sider ® shoes
MIA shoes
Frye boots
Rocket Dog Hailey Jeans Co. kitten heels
Women's shoes and accessories: Favorite fall boots | Piperlime

Casual fall boots are a necessity these days, and with so many too choose from I thought I would show you some fun, budget friendly options for fall (well, except the Frye boots in the middle, but they're just so beautiful.  I can only dream to own a pair someday!)

I am often asked for suggestions on where to find cute boots.  There are so many great options from department stores to TJ Maxx, Piperlime's online store (who doesn't love free shipping and free returns), and even Target. By the way, the colorblock boots are from Target.  So, it totally depends.  I know, helpful aren't I! Okay, depends on what you're looking for, it varies from year to year for me.  Anyways, here are a few great pairs to get you started.

Maternity Wear for Fall

Maternity Wear for Fall

Old Navy maternity

I had a request for a preggo post, so hear it is!  Maternity wear sure has come along way, but I know, I know, everything always looks so cute when you're NOT pregnant!  But, with stores like Old Navy, Gap, Target, Loft and Boden all carrying maternity wear (plus many more) how can you go wrong these days?! No excuses for frumpy maternity wear anymore, mamas (well, except for when you're exhausted, sick or just feel like a big 'ol bus)!

Cozy Fall

Cozy Fall

Cardigan
T shirt
plaid coat
boots
pearl earrings
Loop scarve

Here's a cozy fall look that mixes two of my favorite trends this season - menswear and lace. Two classic pieces that you will wear for years to come. I'm always a sucker for some elbow patches. Each of these pieces are fabulous on their own, but even more fabulous together. Great wardrobe staples!

Whimsical

Whimsical

long sleeve knit shirt

There's just something about this J Crew sweater that I love!  This genre of sweater, with the little picture on the front, is super trendy for fall.  Others have stars, hearts, etc... on them, and while some can be better suited for my younger clients, I just love this little french chicken with his beret.  Everyone could use some more whimsy in their life, don't you think?
Did I mention that I'm totally digging these retro loafers? Ah, the good 'ol days.

Fall Dress

Fall Dress

vintage style dress

Looking to add a fun piece to your wardrobe for fall?  This dress may be just the thing.  How cute paired with tights or leggings. Throw a cardigan over top and wear with boots when the temperature drops. A great any occasion dress for work, church, or a night out on the town.

Moccasins

Moccassins

pocket t shirt
jeans
shoes
shoulder bag
earrings
belt

Moccasins are a big trend for fall, and boy do they bring back memories!  As they say, if you hold on to something long enough, it will eventually come back in style. =)

This outfit has a little southwestern vibe to it (which is also a hot trend this season), but moccasins serve as a great neutral with any casual outfit.

Casual Mixing

Casual Mixing

long sleeve top
cotton tank top
cropped cuffed jeans
loafer shoes
cross body shoulder bag
earrings
shawl

Today's post demonstrates how you can mix prints, with this striped sweater and paisley scarf.  In today's fashion world rules are meant to be broken, and top on the list is the rule that says thou shall not mix prints (it's right up there with thou shall not wear white after Labor Day).  Now, the trickier part may be doing it so that you look stylish and not like you got dressed in the dark.  So, when you're getting started try staying in the same color palette as you're playing with different prints, and most importantly have fun!

This week is just flying by!  I can't believe it's Wednesdsay, already.  For those of you who need a little workwear inspiration to get you through the rest of  the week, look no further!

This outfit contains great foundational pieces for any work wardrobe that work marvelously together, and can also make about 100 other outfits.  I'm not exaggerating.

How to Wear Blazers for Fall

Blazers - Hot for Fall!

flannel jacket
jeans
long sleeve crewneck
embroidered shoes
ostrich handbag
bubble statement necklace

Blazers are once again big for fall, not to mention a classic closet staple that never goes out of style.  I hate to say something cheesy like, a must have for every women's closet, but you know, it is right up there.

We're seeing more casual blazers this season in all different fabrics and cuts from sweater fabrics to this flannel piece from J Crew.  I love this camel color as a nice alternative to the classic black blazer.  What a great look for casual Friday at work, or Sunday brunch!

Colored Jeans for Fall

Colored Jeans for Fall

v neck tank top
Skinny leg jeans
loafer shoes
loris shoes handbag
Earrings
Piperlime sweater

I have to say I was a huge skeptic at first, on the whole colored jeans trend, but they've come along way in the last year with different styles and fits to appeal to more body shapes.  You can also find them in every price point, from high end designesr to LOFT, Old Navy and Target. I love this burgendy color (and have added a similar pair to my wardrobe) for fall because it's very neutral and versatile, not to mention that the darker colors are always more slimming. =)  What do you think?  Are you daring enough to take the plunge this fall?

Sorry I've been a little negligent with my posts, lately!  I've been so busy meeting with all of you that I haven't had as much time to post!  I'm heading out for a day of shopping with an awesome mom who's ready to revamp her wardrobe now that she's all done having those beautiful babies. Love my job!

Add a Statement Necklace

Add a Statement Necklace

Striped top

Bright statement necklaces continue to be big for fall and can completely change any outift from drab to fab! And we can't forget about a great pair of boots!  There are so many to choose from this season, which style will you be rockin?!

Brights for Fall

Casual Fall - Brights

Big Buddha bag

Bright colors are definitely still hot for fall, which I am totally loving.  Loafers and slipper  shoes are very popular as well, and Gap has a great selection of bright colored loafers to check out at very reasonable prices.  Wearing a colored shoe is a super easy way to ramp up an otherwise boring outfit.  Did you see the fun elbow patches on this tee? I'm a sucker for an elbow patch, so this one was a no brainer!

Early Fall for the Ladies

Untitled #176

Banana Republic floral top
Skinny jeans
Green handbag
 Cuff jewelry
Stella & Dot hematite jewelry
Piperlime sandals

I aim to please all ages on my blog here, and I know I've been a little negligent of my "more mature" followers lately with all the back to school talk.  So, this one is for you ladies.

Colored denim is still hot for fall, and this indigo color is a great way to participate.
Green is also going to be big, and an easy way to join the trend is with a great bag like this one!

Bohemian End of Summer

Bohemian Summer

chiffon shirt
vintage tank top
denim shorts
gladiator sandals
fringe handbag
hematite jewelry
sterling silver jewelry

Here's a super cute boho look to wrap up the summer, and head into fall.  Great for high school and college, or anyone with a little inner flower child.

Long sleeves with shorts is one of my favorite looks, and perfect for fall. Happy Labor Day, everyone!

White Shorts

End of Summer

color block top
chino shorts
embellished sandals
cross body shoulder bag
Cubic zirconia jewelry
Crystal jewelry

Well, the unofficial end of summer is drawing near. School has already started for many and is right around the corner for the rest of us. I'm still in a bit of denial though, and because I'm a tank top and shorts kind of girl I'm going to hold out as long as I can!

Enjoy the holiday weekend and be sure to fit in all your favorite summer activities.  I know there's lots of beach, pool, grilling and ice cream in my plans for the weekend.

Back to College

Back to College

denim shorts

Lots of college students are heading back to school this week, so this one's for you guys!  It may be a tad warm for this sweater today, but give it a week or two and it will be absolutely perfect.  Notice how we're matching prints? And you don't even have to match the colors precisely - effortless style I like to call it!

Okay, time to hit those books and study hard kids!

Back to School - Tween

Back to School - Tween

chambray shirt
pleated skirt
ballet flat
messenger bag
stud earrings
leaf necklace

Back to school shopping for tweens is no easy task.  I have one of my own, and it can be a real challenge to find clothing that is age appropriate, fits well, and is budget friendly!  Not to mention something that you and your tween can actually agree upon. =)

Here's a great look for the preppy tween.  Sweet, girly, and each piece can be styled in multiple ways. But hey, if you're able to get your daughter to at least wear something besides a hoodie or screenprint tee with a store name across the front, you're making progress!

Thinking Fall

Untitled #177

platform sandals
tan handbag
sterling silver jewelry
wide belt
Piperlime dress

It's time to start thinking about fall, and this dress is on the top of my favorites list!  Then, when I saw that it's on sale for the next 4 days, I just had to share it with all of you!  The emerald green color is a favorite of mine, and this dress will be serve you well right into boot and tight season!  I hope you love it as much as I do.

It's time to start pulling out of some your fall wardrobe, ladies and taking stock of what you need to update and add to your closet to spruce it up for the next season.  If that task seems daunting to you, pop me an email at kate@steenwykbuilders.com, I'd love to help.

White Capris

Untitled #173

sweater
Boyfriend jeans
flip flop shoes
Satchel bag
Chain jewelry
 Kate Spade tech accessory

With cooler weather in view this week, it sure is nice to think capris instead of shorts.  Don't get me wrong, I am a total shorts girl, but we all need to mix it up once in awhile.

I love this new polka dot sweater from Old Navy - the perfect transitional piece to wear now and into fall.  Wouldn't it be adorable with a pair of burgendy or green pair of jeans?  Or layered underneath a blazer?  Lots of possibilities!  And if I ever get a fancy iphone thingy, you'll see me with this fancy case!  I might have to get the phone just so I can get a cool case.

Novice to Advanced

Up & Down

shirt

When you're able to begin mixing together dressy and casual pieces in your wardrobe to create new outfits you know you're moving from a novice to more advanced style. =)

Here's a great example of how it works.  Take a dressy silk blouse like this one and pair it a pair of distressed cut-off jeans.  Keep your accessories classic and easy and presto, there you have it!

My apologies for my sparce postings the last couple of weeks, I've been having technical difficulties posting my outfits.  Hopefully all is now fixed, and I'm looking forward to posting some great outfits as we begin to transition to fall.  Did I really just type that?  But let's not forget about the rest of the summer, I'm not ready to say good-bye quite yet!

Making Errands Fun

Untitled #166

tiered top
flat front shorts
sandals
tote handbag
tear drop earrings
chunky jewelry
retro shades

There's nothing like a fun outfit to help make all those running around town errands more bearable!  And if this outfit isn't fun, I don't know what is!  If you're a beginner with brights, and a bit intimated, I always recommend pairing them with a neutral.  But, as you grow more confident (and maybe have a little guidance from me!) you can mix and match brights with ease.

If you need some help mixing and matching those brights, email me at kate@steenwykbuilders.com to set up an appointment.

Lemon Yellow

Lemon Yellow

flare jeans
Loft sleeveless blouse
canvas bag
jewelry
tortoise sunglasses
Piperlime sandals

Lemon yellow is one of my favorite colors!  Some women are a little intimidated by it, and you do need the right skin coloring to pull it off, but there's nothing more cheery than wearing a bit of sunshine.

This sleeveless blouse is also a great layering piece for all seasons.  You can pair it with other brights (pink, blue, green) or neutrals (black, navy, camel).  Lots and lots of options, girls!

Ready for the Weekend

Ready for the Weekend

Short sleeve top
cutoff shorts
chunky shoes
Slouchy handbag
coral earrings
aviator shades

Wow, where did the time go?!  Here it is Saturday, already.  It's hard to believe that we're half way through July.  I try not to think about it, I like to live in denial that summer will go on forever.

Today's look demonstrates how you can add a punch of color to a neutral outfit, without looking over done or too matchy, matchy.  Aren't these sandals awesome?!

Summer Conservative

Summer Conservative

Boden shell
Chino shorts
Summer sandals
FOSSIL vintage handbag
Opi nailpolish

Conservative doesn't have to be boring!  No frump here, my friend. Pairing two colors like taupe and navy, which you may not normally think to wear together, helps keep things interesting and fashion forward.

4th of July Barbecue

J Crew vintage tank top
Old navy shorts
TOMS peep toe espadrille wedge
J Crew striped handbag
Blue necklace

Independence Day is only a few days away, do you have big plans?! I hope to be out on the lake with my family and friends, weather permitting.  Hopefully, after a full day of sun and fun, I'll be able to keep my eyelids open long enough to catch some local fireworks at dusk.

It goes without saying that every good 4th of July celebration includes a BBQ, festive attire required, of course! =)  So, here's a great look to show off your partiotic spirit in style.

Happy Independence Day everyone!  We have lots to be thankful for in the grand U.S. of A!

Summer Weekend

Summer Weekend

Boden vest
Quiksilver shorts
Flat heel shoes
Clutch
Jewelry
Essie nail polish

Back from another vacation, but that's it, I promise! No more slacking the rest of the summer.  I was doing a little camping with the fam, where words like style, fashion, make up and hair dryer were not in my vocabulary.

It's good to be back to the real world though, where even though it's hot, hot, hot, you can both stay cool and look cool!  Enjoy the weekend!

All Ages

All Ages

Old Navy jersey top

Did you miss me?!  I was off galavanting on a fabulous houseboat vacation, but now it's back to reality and time to catch up on some outfit posts.

I love today's outfit because it works so well on all ages, young to mature.  I especially love these TOM wedges, can you believe they're TOMS?!
