Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

Well, It's the eve of Christmas Eve and I can't wait!  Christmas is my favorite time of year, I love everything about it - the music, movies, traditions, parties, shopping, and most of all what we celebrate - the gift of Emmanuel!

I hope you feel great, look great and that your weekend will be filled with lots of love and joy!

Thanks to all of you for your support of  Real Life. Real Style this past year.  I'm having a blast and look forward to what God has in store for 2012!

Winter White

Winter White

ASOS mesh top
Jacket
Current/Elliott jeans
ALDO Heels

Here's a sure way to glam up Christmas or New Year's!  I love the winter white skinny jeans, versus the normal black pant, it's a great way to mix things up. When you have a statement top like this one keep everything else simple, and let the top be the focal piece.

I hope everyone will enjoy this week leading up to Christmas and is able to take time to reflect and celebrate the greatest gift of all this season, the birth of Jesus Christ.  Joy to the World, the Lord is come!

Lovely in Lace for the Holidays

Lovely in Lace for the Holidays

Lace top
Pants
Old Navy velvet shoes

Patent leather handbag

First let me start by saying that for some reason words in the my posts are becoming links, and I can't figure out why.  So, don't click on them, and if anyone is wiser than I when it comes to these things please let me know how to fix it!

If sequins aren't your thing how about a little romantic lace for the holidays?  You can't help but feel pretty in this outfit, and bonus, it's comfy too!  Heels or boots would also work well, but I love the softness and ease of the ballet flats. They compliment the outfit beautifully without looking like you're trying too hard.

Don't forget, it's not too late to purchase a Real Life. Real Style gift certificate for Christmas!  Simply email me at kate@steenwykbuilders.com and I'll take care of the rest!

Sequins for Plus Size

Sequins In Plus Size

Old navy shirt
Leather jacket
A.N.A pocket jeans
Boots

As promised, here is the same Old Navy sequin tank that was in last Friday's post, but in plus size.  The tank looks fabulous layered under this beautiful structured faux leather jacket, don't ya think?!  A nice wide leg, dark wash trouser and heeled boots are the perfect finishing touches.  So classy!

Casual Sequins

Casual Sequins

Lauren Ralph Lauren pocket t shirt
Old Navy sequin tank top
boot cut jeans

Ballet shoes
Crossbody handbag

This is a great way to incorporate sequins into your casual wear, during the holidays, or everyday.  Simply layer a sequin tank over a long sleeve t-shirt or even a button up shirt.  With the sequins being the focal point you can keep the rest of the outfit pretty simple, but I do love the pop of color in the red patent ballet flats.

Stay tuned for my next post which will show you how to use this same tank in a plus size outfit for the holidays.

I'm getting close to being done with my shopping, but just when I think I'm finished I remember one more thing I need to buy, so it seems there are always those last minute gifts to purchase.  But that's okay, I don't mind.  It IS the most wonderful time of year!  Happy shopping!

Looking to add a little spice to your work wardrobe?  This is a great vintage look to do just that.  The dress is so fun, and great for creative office environments, to get those creative juices flowing!  Don't forget those colored tights, which are all the rage this season.  Even if you don't work in a "creative" environment, what a great way to express your fun and creative personality!

Isotoner knit glove
Cosy Mittens

As promised, here is a post on some snazzy accessories to help keep you feeling bright and cheery during the cold winter months!  Perfect for heading out to those Christmas parades and Christmas Caroling events.  Notice that your scarf doesn't have to match your gloves, which doesn't have to match your hat, it just needs to coordinate. =)

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  I will be posting some fun holiday looks in the upcoming weeks, so stay tuned!

Thanksgiving Day Dress

I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving remembering God's goodness and all that you have to be thankful for!  Here's a last minute look to inspire you if you still don't know what to wear for tomorrow's festivities.  Note, there's plenty of room in this dress for seconds and dessert. =)

Outerwear

Outerwear

Long shearling coat
Fitted coat
Funnel neck coat
Daytrip fake fur coat
H M tailored coat
Wool blend coat

Well, it's about time to pull out those winter coats.  In honor of the event I thought I would share some of my favorite outerwear looks for winter, a little something for everyone I think!  It's important to have a fun, stylish coat because for those of us who live in cooler climates, they get a lot of use. It's the first thing people will see on you for about 4 or 5 months out of the year, so you may as well make a good impression!

Note, there are not any black jackets, not there's anything wrong with black.  I'm as practical as the next person, but these colors are also very neutral, but fun. =)  When choosing a winter coat don't forget to take into consideration your body shape, because different styles work best on different frames.

Winter comes every year, so you may as well embrace it and look good while doing it!
P.S. Don't forget to accessorize - I'll save that for another post!

Looking for a way to spice up your work wardrobe?  A fun way to throw in some bold color with a basic black pencil skirt is by adding a cobalt blue blazer and bright hand bag.  And what's more fun than polka dots?!  Go straight from work to a night out by swapping your skirt for a some black or denim jeans.

Well, TGIF!  Whether you're heading out for pizza, starting your Christmas shopping or making preparations for Thanksgiving, this outfit will be perfect.  I love the pop of color in the belt that gives it that extra pizazz.  You could belt the sweater or put the belt through the loops and leave the cardigan open.  Have a great weekend!

Thanksgiving Neutrals - Plus Size

Here's another great outfit idea for Thanksgiving, or anyday.  I must be into neutrals lately because my last two posts were both in neutral palettes.  This outfit could obviously take you right from Thanksgiving all the way through to New Years!

I can't believe Thanksgiving Day is next week already!  I know we're all starting to think about our plans for the day and menu items.  In all your preparations don't forget to start thinking ahead to what you're going to wear as well!  I love this sweet outfit, and it never hurts to wear layers so you're prepared for whatever temperature the room will be at Grandma's house.

Feeling Wild in Leopard

Feeling Wild in Lepoard

top
leopard print faux fur jacket
Forever21 five pocket pants
Wedge heel shoes
oversized clutch handbag
Dot jewelry
Mood jewelry

Ready for a fun night out on the town?  This should get you in the mood!  I really like this leopard print coat because it doesn't look cheap, but classy.  I think this coat could work for all ages, you just need to adjust the outfit underneath to make it age appropriate.  It can be dressed up or down, so versatile.  What a fun, playful, yet classy way to embrace the animal print trend this season.  Go for it girls!

Fall Maxi Dress

Fall Maxi Dress

Here is a great comfy, yet stylish maxi dress for fall.  Notice how I've mixed browns and blacks?!  A totally chic thing to do, it just takes a little practice, or some professional guidance. =)

Jeans and Pearls

Jeans and Pearls

jeans
Dana buchman shell
LOFT wedge heel boots

satchel bag
bracelets
earrings

If you're looking for a way to look instantly chic, look no further!  Jeans and pearls are your ticket.  I love the formal nature of this pearl trimmed cardigan with the skinny jeans and wedge boots, much more fun and chic than wearing it with plain old black dress pants.

For some reason this look keeps reminding of me of the First Lady, and yeah, I'd like to think it's something First Lady, Michelle Obama would wear. =) She does have great style (or a great stylist!) and knows how to use color in her wardrobe.

Leggings for the Weekend

Leggings for the Weekend

Old navy cardigan
cotton tank
Gap pants
boots
Black handbag
Wide belt

Ahhh, there's nothing like a nice pair of comfy leggings for the weekend, and here's a great way to wear them.  A nice long sweater, belted, with a nice pop of color underneath.  Throw on your favorite go to earrings, a fun boot, chic purse and you're off.  Note - leggings don't work for everyone, just like skinny jeans don't work for everyone. As I always say, not every trend works for everyone.  Know your body shape, age, and stay true to your personal style.  If you want to hear more, pop me an email to schedule a consult at kate@steenwykbuilders.com!

A Little Fur

A Little Fur

Esprit turtleneck top
GAP boot cut pants
Nine west boots
Bangles jewelry
black bead earrings
SimplyVera Wang vest

Fur or faux fur is all the rage for this fall and winter.  I think today's look is a great way to incorporate it into your work wardrobe, with a nice black pant, and then the cognac turtleneck and bracelet.  This may  not be a color combination you would normally put together, but it works!  Of course you can also wear this vest all weekend by trading with the dress pants for a great pair of skinny or flare jeans.

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!

Fitted long sleeve t shirt
bootcut jeans
flat shoes
printed tote bag
Necklace
Cableknit Sweater

Here is your Halloween inspired outfit for the day.  You can celebrate Halloween, but still look chic, who would of thought!  Layer the striped tee under the short sleeve cable knit sweater along with a pair of cords.  You may normally think that the tone on tone necklace and sweater combo would not work together, but I think it looks fantastic with this outfit.  Just another example of how to think outside your normal style box!

Black Jeans

Untitled

I recently purchased a pair of black jeans, and I have to say they have become my new favorite.  They're so versatile - easy to dress up or down and seem to go with pretty much everything.  Notice the great necklace again, this time thrown over a long sleeve tee.  I'm also really diggin this red coat, it's a great alternative to black, yet still very neutral, and a popular color this season.

Accessories Can Make All The Difference

Accessories - Make A Difference

cardigan
pants
Penny loafer shoes
FOSSIL leather flap handbag
necklace

The right accessories take this chino and sweater ensemble from average to A+!  Throw in a fun and colorful purse and you are pretty close to perfection.  The lesson of the day is don't forget to accessorize!  Notice I didn't even include earrings, with this type of statement necklace you really don't need any, or just stick to simple studs.

For My Tween/Teen Peeps!

For My Tween/Teen Peeps!

Hollister Co beach top
striped top
Denim skinny jeans
Boots
Old Navy mini handbag
embossed belt
Old Navy slouch beret

I had the privilegeof hanging out with some awesome 8th grade girls this week to talk about fashion and style stuff, as well as inner beauty.  It was lots of fun, and I can tell you that there is hope for our future, women!  These are girls who are beautiful on the outside and the inside, they sure have it much more together thae I did in 8th grade!

It also made my day this week when one of my favorite tween girls was showing me her outfit and told me she saw something kind of like it on my blog.  Love that girl!
So, in honor of all the girls out there, soon to women, we may as well start you out right! =)  This post is for you!

Killer Blazer, With A Retro Edge

Retro

I love this camel blazer, what a great option instead of a leather jacket.  This outfit definitely has a retro feel with the higher waisted flare jeans, which are hot for fall.  I'm really enjoying the camel/brown and red color combination, it gives the outfit a fresh and modern look.  So, if you're feeling a little retro this just might be the look for you.  If not, you can still find something red and something camel or brown in your closet and try to recreate the look for yourself!

No White After Labor Day?

No White After Labor Day?

cableknit sweater
Tulle wool coat
GAP super skinny jeans
Lands End canvas shirt
Ballerina shoes

Polka dot jewelry

No white after Labor Day?  Who says?  That "rule" is definitely long gone.  You can absolutely wear white into fall, and you see it in all the fashion magazines.  Just add some cozy layers like this plaid shirt and cableknit sweater. Top it off with a cute, fun coat and you're good to go.

And, if anyone looks at you funny, just smile and tell them that old rule is sooo 1990's, people. =)

New Service - Girls Night Out!

I'm excited to share with everyone another new service I'm now offering!

What can be better than good friends, great food, a glass of wine (or diet coke) and talking about fashion and style?!  I'm so excited to announce that I'm now offering a Girls Night Out package.  Get together a group of friends and I'll join you for an hour to talk about current fashion trends, style basics, tips for your wardrobe, and answer all your style questions.  You won't get the one on one closet attention like an individual consult, but for $10/person you can't go wrong!

I received a call from a group of ladies who work together in a medical office and were looking for a fun idea for their girls night out.  They asked if they could hire me to come and talk with them.  I thought, sure I'd love to, what a great idea!  So, if you're looking for an excuse to get together with the girls, look no further!

Don't forget all you deer hunting widows, what season is quickly approaching. =)
Contact me at kate@steenwykbuilders.com to schedule your GNO today!  (Click on 'More Information' under 'Interested in Hiring Me' for a complete list of services.)

Weekend Wear For the More Mature

Weekend Wear For the More Mature

Talbots sweater
Banana Republic pants
brown booties
Tote handbag
Brass jewelry

I thought "more mature" was another way of saying those who are more wise and experienced than some of us (if you get my drift).  And actually, this look works for all ages.  You could also do this sweater with leggings or skinny cords/jeans if you are less wise and mature. =)
Doesn't this look cozy for the cool weather we've now embarked on? I love this outfit, so sophisticated and classy!  Bundle up and enjoy the weekend!

Transitioning Dresses Into Fall

Unexpected Fall Dress

Zipper dress
Old Navy zipper jacket
Mimi Loves Jimi wood shoes
Tinley Road brass jewelry

Kate Spade facets jewelry

As you already know if you've been following my blog, lace continues to be a big trend into fall. I love this look because the cream lace dress can go from sweet and romantic to edgy when you throw on a leather jacket and black wedge for fall.  Who'd of thunk?! Add a beautiful statment bracelet to ump up the wow factor and perfecto!

When You Don't Want to Get Dressed, But You Must!

When You Don't Want to Get Dressed, But You Must!

Target Boots
Yellow bag

Well, here is my go to look when I don't feel like getting dressed.  Ever have those days?  A day when you're just not feeling it and don't want to think about what to wear?

When you wake up to one of those days, when you don't have the time or energy to put into your outfit here is a great template to use (instead of sweats!).  Start with a longer, cozy cardigan, throw on a scarf (with some visual interest), your favorite dark jeans, flat boots, hoops earrings and you're off!  Note that the sweater and scarf both have some visual interest, either in texture or pattern, which helps the outfit from looking to blah.

Mixin it Up

Mixin it Up

Tailored vest
Lace shirt
GAP jeans
TOMS flat heels

Here's a great way to mix together two trends - the menswear inspired trend for fall (vest), with the also very popular feminine/lace fashion trend (lace top).  Put the two together and viola, the perfect outfit!

Friday Night Date Night - Plus Size

Friday Night Date Night - Plus Size

Old Navy sheer tank
Silver Jeans plus size jeans
LOFT flat shoes
Brass jewelry
Earrings

I love this date night look - sassy, but classy!  You could always layer it up with a cardigan, blazer or leather jacket over top, and change it up to a heel instead of a flat.  Come on ladies, it's time to take it up a notch for those all important date nights with your man! =)

Office Chic - At Any Age

Office Chic - At Any Age

One of the reasons I love this outfit is because it looks fantastic on women of any age.  Start with a great wide leg classic, yet chic trouser (great on all body types).  Add a bright femine, fun blouse and then top it off with a flattering patterned cardigan (also good on all body shapes).  You can always add some fun and pizazz of your own wth your choice of accessories.  So, if you're stuck in a rut at the office, give this a try - or call me to help. =)

Shorts for Fall

Shorts for Fall

Embellished top
Old Navy sheer tank
J crew shorts
pearl flower earrings

I am loving shorts for fall and think they are so versatile dressed up or down.  There are endless options of tights or leggings worn underneath.  Pumps, boots or flats all work great as footwear.  I think shorts are a fun way to mix things up instead of wearing a skirt.

If you need some help thinking outside your normal wardrobe box this fall, I'd love to help.  Contact me at kate@steenwykbuilders.com

P.S.  I had a great time hanging out with the 140 women at Ridge Point's Celebrate Women ministry kick off last week!  It was so fun to share a little bit about style, and inner beauty. I really appreciate all the support, and give me a shout if I can be of any more assistance, ladies!

Fall Color

Fall Color

Crew neck tee
Old Navy zip jacket
dark rinse jeans
TOMS corduroy shoes
floral print handbag
vintage belt
Beaded Hoops

Just because it's fall doesn't mean you have to stop wearing bright colors.  Bright color is actually a big trend for this fall (yay for me, since I do not do well in traditional autumn colors).

Cross body bags continue to be popular for fall, not to mention practical, and I LOVE these printed Fossil bags (note, you can get these at Younkers right now during the Goodwill sale, 20% off any item for every used clothing item you bring in).

I also need to take a moment to tell you about my new all time favorite shoe - TOMS!  You may have heard of them.  I was little unsure at first, but once I put them on, oh my!  They have an insert that gives you good arch support - important for me, and are so incredibly comfortable.  They come in all different kinds of fun patterns and designs.  The best part is that for every shoe purchased, TOMS donates a pair of new shoes to a child in Africa - can't go wrong there.

Finally, this jacket from Old Navy is really nice.  I tried one on in the store, and was suprised by how nice the jacket felt and fit.  A great deal, and a great look.  It defnitely could pass for a more expensive jacket.

Are You Ready For Some Football?!

Are You Ready For Some Football?!

Long shearling coat
GAP slim fit jeans
Quiksilver striped shoes
Floral scarve

Are you at a loss as to what to wear to the game Friday night?  You of course want to be comfy and warm, but yet look good.  Are you sick and tired of the same fleece coat?  Here's a great look to keep you looking and feeling stylish, yet not overdressed for the big game!  Go team!

Lady Like for the Office

Lady Like for the Office

Stepping it up at the office for fall ladies! Looking classy and sophisticated in this polka dot dress from Boden (a little 50's throwback).  Aren't these red mary jane pumps to die for?!  I love the boyfriend cardigan over top if your office gets a little chilly, and it's a great masculine addition to this femine outfit, that also makes it a little less formal.

Soccer Mom

Soccer Mom

Well, it's that time of year again, time for some kids soccer! Here's a super cute and casual, but definitely pulled together outfit to keep you looking good on the sidelines.  Love this messenger tote from Boden!

Now that the kids are back in school it's time to take a little time for yourself.  I'd love to spend an hour or two with you to come up with some great ways to transition your summer wardrobe into fall, as well as suggest some fun new pieces to add to your closet this season.  Pop me an email at kate@steenwykbuilders.com.

P.S. Stay tuned for next week's Friday night football look!

From the Gym to the Grocery Store

From the Gym to the Grocery Store

Well, it's time for the kiddos to head back to school and for everyone to get back into a routine.  Maybe that means getting back to the gym for you, now that the kids are at school.  Here's a great look to take you from the gym right to the grocery store.  Throw on this great cardigan from Piperlime over a fresh tank tap, add a necklace and you're off to store, without your kids in tow!

A Little Boho

A Little Boho

If your style is a little bit more bohemian, this might be the perfect look for you heading into fall.  Easy, breezy, and oh so cool! This great top from Ruche (www.ruche.com) is perfect for  concealing anything extra in your mid-section (if you know what I mean) and the fringe bag is oh so big for fall.

Favorite Things for Fall Vol. 2

Favorite Things for Fall Vol. 2

Here is volume 2 as promised!  It's so hard for me to choose, but I was finally able to narrow it down.

1.  Love this sherling vest from Piperlime, enough said. (http://piperlime.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=64448&vid=1&pid=608724&scid=608724002)
2.  Menswear inspired shoes are hot this fall, and I think these sueded oxfords from Old Navy are so cool (http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=55148&vid=1&pid=857820&scid=857820012)
3.  Lace is another big trend for fall, which I adore, and it's also totally timeless.  This top from Hollister is beautiful on its own or would be great layered underneath a blazer or cardigan, work or weekend! 4.  Bow tie blouses continue to be big, and I love this printed one from Piperlime.  Super cute tucked in some higher waisted jeans, or a pencil skirt for work. Very classy and chic(http://piperlime.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=64478&vid=1&pid=888923&scid=888923002)
5.  This is a great skinny jean for those of us who can not and should not do the low-rise jean thing any longer.  The sweetheart skinny jean from Old Navy has a higher waist, but still the skinny jean effect. The uniform dark wash is perfect, and so is the price.  They also some in tall and petites. 6.  My final pick is this neck tie belt.  I have a fettish with belts and this one from Lands End Canvas has me drooling.  It also comes in a super cute stripe pattern.  It totally satisfies my preppy itch!
