Monochromatic for the Holidays

Monochromatic

V neck top
Gap black skinny jeans
Nine West short boots
BaubleBar drop earrings
Baublebar necklace

Are you  looking for something a little different to wear to your  upcoming holiday parties this season?  May I suggest a monochromatic look like this one?  Add some bling to spice it up and a great pair of boots.  You could also wear a scarf instead of the bling and flats instead of the boots. Whatever suits your fancy, ladies.

Don't forget there's still time to pick up a Real Life. Real Style gift certificate for Christmas!  I've been busy making deliveries, popping them in the mail, and arranging pick ups this week and I'd be happy to do the same for you or that someone special on your list!  Email me at kate@steenwykbuilders.com to get started.

Tis the Season for Scarves

Tis the Season for Scarves

JC Penney Infinity scarf
Leith infinity scarf
American Eagle Outfitters scarve
Sole Society polka dot scarve
Tartan plaid scarve
Gap striped shawl

Scarves are still going strong for winter, in all shapes and sizes!  Here are a few fun ones to consider if you're looking to make an addition to your wardrobe or to give as a gift for Christmas.  One question I get asked a lot is how to wear a scarf.  My philosophy is the less fussy the better.  You don't want to look like you just spend an hour tying your scarf in some fancy new knots!  Think Paris chic, the simpler the better!

What to Wear: Thanksgiving

Camel Blazer

LOFT long sleeve sweater
Gap jacket
Lands End jeans
Gap ballet flat
FOSSIL satchel handbag
FOSSIL bracelet watch
Fossil earrings

Well, it's almost here!  It's Thanksgiving week and although everyone has much bigger things to worry about, like what dish they're bringing to dinner, or if their turkey will turn out, we can't forget about what to wear.  I love this classic, preppy look for Thanksgiving.  Layers are always good, especially if you're not sure whether your host likes the thermostat cranked up or turned way down.  Flats are always easy to remove if you need to take your shoes off, and a good pair of stretchy jeans is a must!

This year I am so very thankful for each one of you who take the time to follow my blog, those of you who hire me to help revamp your closet and wardrobe, who ask me to come shopping with you all around town, refer me to your friends, and buy gift certificates for your loved ones.  Not to mention those of you who hire me to speak at your wonderful events.  I have much to be thankful for, so thanks for making this dream of mine a reality!!

This season we're seeing lots of fun jackets that can be worn as sweaters or as a jacket, depending on the weather where you live.  It's a fresh look that adds a little variety and spice to the cardigans and blazers you may normally use to layer in the cold months.  Gap as a bunch of great options right now.  Here is a sampling of my favorites, have a great week!

Color Blocking

Black Jeans

Block sweater
black skinny jeans
tall boots
Fossil jewelry
chunky necklace

Color blocking continues to be a big trend for fall and winter and I've been swooning over this particular color blocked sweater from J. Crew Factory for awhile. I'm really digging black on black lately and think this outfit looks very city chic put together.  Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

By the way, don't you love this bracelet from Fossil?  I think it's going on my Christmas list! Speaking of Christmas, Real Life. Real Style gift certificates make great gifts!  Email me at, Kate@steenwykbuilders.com, and I'll take care of the rest.

Fall Boots For Under $100

Fall Boots For Under $100

tall riding boots
Sperry Top-Sider boots
Dr. Scholl's boots
Nine West boots
knee high boots
back zipper boots
SOREL waterproof shoes

Finding a great pair of boots on a budget can be a challenge, sometimes.  You would think it would be a cinch with the selection out there, but when you think about the heel, color, style and comfort, your choices quickly dwindle.  I was shopping with a client recently, and was reminded of this very thing, so I thought I would pass along some super cute, affordable, yet quality options here on the blog.

If you like leopard and leather, this post is for you! All the pieces in this outfit are hot trends right now, but by themselves are also closet staples.  So versatile for the office, weekend, day and night.  If you need help making your closet a bit more versatile, I'm your gal!  Email me at kate@steenwykbuilders.com, to set up a consult.

Colored Corduroy

Colored Corduroy

camp shirt
pants
embellished ballet flat
ALDO tote bag
watch
earrings

I've been shopping with a few clients lately and one item that I encouraged them to purchase this fall is colored corduroy skinnies.  I have a couple pair myself and LOVE them.  They're so comfy and add a little variety to a closet full of denim.  Cords can pass for dress pants and are also great for casual day wear.  My clients tend to be a little unsure of what to wear with them, so here's a great out of the box look for colored cords.  Try a top in lighter hue to the same tone.  It may be a stretch for some of you, but I'm sure you're looking at the pic saying yeah, that really does look cute together!

Fall Grid

Fall Grid

Gap dress
brown biker jacket
opaque tight
high heel cowboy boots
Red stone necklace

This grid pattern is a big trend for fall whether it's in shirts, pants or dresses.  However, if you have broad shoulders like me, or a larger bust, I would caution you to proceed with care.   I do think this dress is super cute though and so versatile for fall and winter.
Give yourself a little more shape and definition by belting the sheath too!

Fall Neutrals

Fall Neutrals

cardigan
black skinny jeans
Gap shirt
boots
handbag
watch
chain bracelet

This time of year I sometimes begin to crave toned down, soothing neutrals appropriate for fall.  Depending on my mood, I may add a pop of color with a shoe, necklace, scarf or handbag.  Other times I like to keep it all clean and simple, like Jennifer Aniston. ;)  The layers also come in super handy this time of year.

You can find just about everything under the sun in burgundy right now from pants, skirts, purses, to accessories and tops.  Here are a few of my favorites finds under $100 (I already snagged the sleeveless colorblock top from Target). I'll also be showing you how to style burgundy in the weeks to come, here on the blog.  Stay tuned!

Final Days of Summer

skinny khaki pants
metallic flat

chain link bracelet
square sunglasses
Boyfriend Printed Shirt
Stella & Dot

So, are you ready for fall, or are you hanging on for dear life to summer?  I'm a summer gal, shorts and tanks are my thing, so I'm always sad to see them go, and the jean season seems oh so long.  Thank goodness we have so many different pant/jean options to choose from these days, and I am looking forward to sharing some of them with you in the upcoming weeks and months, here on the blog.  But, for now I'm hanging on to these last days of summer, so here's another great transitional outfit for now and later.  Have a great week, everyone!

Mother/Daughter Beauty Bash Fun!

Here are a few pictures from our first Mother/Daughter Beauty Bash earlier this week, over at my house.  I posted these on my facebook page earlier in the week, but I know many of you readers are not fans of my page, so I thought I would share them here as well.  We had such a blast!  The girls may kill me for posting the pic of them with their beauty masks on, but it's just too cute to resist!  I don't have any pics of my section of the evening, but here are the girls getting some great skin care tips from Mary Kay Director, Tracey DeKraker.

Here's a pic of all the moms and their daughters. So beautiful, aren't they?!  I can't believe these girls are all starting 7th grade in a few weeks!  My daughter, Hope is wearing the white shirt and mint cropped jeans, in case you're wondering.  It's a good thing I'm wearing a wedge heel because she's just as tall as I am!

Office Look for Now & Later

Workwear Now & Later

sweater
tank top
skirt
shoes
wedge sandals
bag

Here's a great way to make those wardrobe staples work for you multiple seasons.  Swap out the BR silk blouse for the J Crew sweater, and when that tan fades away and the air gets a bit crisp throw on a pair of black opaque tights, these killer leopard heels and this summer look will last you well into fall. Now that I'm thinking about it, when the snow starts to fly throw a great blazer over the sweater or a colorful cardigan over the blouse and viola! So many options I can hardly stand it.

The school supplies are in the stores, and soon it will be time for back to school shopping, ladies.  So, it's not too early to start thinking about updating your fall wardrobe too!  Email me at kate@steenwykbuilders.com to set up an appointment.

A New Service! Mother/Daughter Beauty Bash

Hi everyone!  I'm back from vacation and excited to share with you a new service I'm offering!  I've been dreaming about it for awhile now and am excited to be getting started!  I'm partnering with Mary Kay Director extraordinaire, Tracey DeKraker, to put together a really fun night for moms and daughters (aimed at middle school to high school).

What's better than beauty, fun and special mother, daughter time! Come prepared to be pampered with Mary Kay facials from Tracey DeKraker. Learn great skin care routines as well as some fun glamour tips appropriate for those in attendance (focusing on the natural look). I will be talking to moms and daughters about how to develop your own personal style, age appropriate dress, achieving modesty while staying trendy, as well as how to navigate those clothing battles! And of course plenty of fun fashion tips. Feel free to bring clothing from home that you have questions about (you too mom)!"

If any of you would be interested hosting a party of your own, along with your daughter, let me know!  The hostesses are free with 10 additional guests (and they also receive a discount on Mary Kay product).  Otherwise the cost is $5/person or $10 per mom/daughter duo.   This would make a great birthday party idea too!

If you have any other questions let me know (kate@steenwykbuilders.com)!  Thanks so much for your support!

Summer Teen

Summer Teen

chiffon tank top
white shorts
ankle wrap sandals
brown handbag
Button Stud Earring
Charm Bracelet

Can't forget about my teen readers!  Here's a great summer time look for all of you.  Sweet, fresh and very summery.  The tie shirt seem to be making a big come back this season.  Swapping the shorts for white jeans would be super cute too!

Summer White

Summer White

top
Old Navy shorts
wedge shoes
straw handbag
Chandeliers

Nothing says summer like crisp white and denim, a simple classic that never goes out of style.  Depending on your mood you can keep it all neutral, like I did here, or spice it up with pops of color in your accessories. The end result is an effortless, but chic summer look.

T-shirt Dress

T-shirt Dress

dress
platform sandals
bracelet
scarve
belt
sunglasses

There's nothing easier to throw on in the summer then a t-shirt dress.  Take it up a notch by throwing on a scarf or statement necklace and viola, you have a super cute, hip mom outfit.  I always encourage my clients to wear a belt to give a little more shape and definition, or make sure your dress is a great fit so it doesn't make you look bigger than what you really are (especially when wearing a horizontal stripe like this outfit).

Monday, June 3, 2013

Print Shorts

Shorts and long sleeves

Old Navy shirt
shorts
slip on shoes
tote bag
jewelry
sunglasses

One of my favorite ways to wear shorts is with a long sleeve top.  It's a little bit more fun and unexpected compared to short sleeves and capris, which can become very b.o.r.i.n.g.  Print shorts are all the rage this season, and they're much easier to pull off then a print pant, since they're half the material. Go figure. =)   You can't go wrong when you pair prints with a casual denim shirt (closet staple, ladies!).

By the way, do you know what's the perfect short length for you?  Make sure and pay close attention to what inseam length works best for your body!

Black & Khaki

Black & Khaki

lightweight sweater
linen pants
mid heels
polka dot handbag
bracelet jewelry
statement necklace

Good ol black and khaki!  Today's post is for my "more mature" clients who are faithful blog readers (I know because they've been telling me during their consults this past month, sharing the tips they've learned. I love it!). Most of the time I'm pushing my clients outside of their box and away from the old stand bys like black and khaki.  But, I also want to show you ways to update a classic look that never goes out of style.  The right accessories, an updated print, and a great fitting pant make all the difference.

Bright Shorts

Bright Shorts

Lands' End sweater
Old Navy shorts
sandals
shopping tote
jewelry

Bright shorts are still hot for this summer and thankfully they're becoming much friendlier to wear, in terms of cut and style. I know I'm beginning to sound like a broken record, but the easiest way to wear brights on the bottom is to keep your top neutral.  If you're a bit braver you can pair it with another bright which has a  pattern or stripe, to create some interest, like I did with this Lands End Canvas sweater.

While you've been out summer shopping I'm sure you also noticed that rolled shorts continue are all over the place.  If you have average to large thighs I would recommend you forgo the roll, it is less then flattering and can make your legs look a bit like a sausage. If you have any questions, or would like me to help get your wardrobe ready for summer email me at kate@steenwykbuilders.com!

Friday Fun!

Friday Fun!

Old Navy jersey t shirt
Converse shoes
Bracelet bangle
Earrings

Oh my goodness, I just couldn't resist.  I used to LOVE Wonder Woman when I was just a wee little pup. I'm usually not a graphic tee kind of gal, but this one might just lure me in.  Fashion is supposed to be fun girls, that's what I always tell my clients.  I think this killer Silpada cuff  may even give me Wonder Woman powers!

BTW, the shorts are also from Old Navy and the yellow cross body bag is from Target (I'm not sure why the links didn't come up).  Have a fun weekend, everyone!  Maybe you can relive a bit of your childhood too!

Maxi Dress

Maxi Dress

Chevron dress
jean jacket
shoes
necklace

Maxi dresses are starting to become a wardrobe staple, in my book.  They're so versatile, comfy, and a great transition piece to take your from season to season.  With price points and shapes to fit everyone, they're a must have for spring and summer.  Be sure to get one that isn't too baggy, or too tight, the fit is important.  Finally, wearing shape wear underneath to give you a nice smooth silhouette is also a must!

Spring Trend: Lace

Lots of Lace

lands end
Lace shirt
crew neck sweater
crew neck t shirt
striped tank top

Lace is a big trend for spring and summer, so I thought I would give you a little sampling from some of the cute and affordable pieces out there.  I love lace for for all ages, but it's important to do it in a way that looks classy and chic, not cheap.  Picking lace in a white or cream is always classic and then you can pair it with colored bottoms or classic dark denim.  If you go with color dress it up a little to give it a richer look, like with white jeans or shorts.

I hope you're inspired to add a little lace to your closet this season.  Have a great weekend, everyone!

p.s. Mother's Day is next week, eek!  There's still time to order a Real Life. Real Style gift certificate.  Email me at kate@steenwykbuilders.com and I'll take care of the rest!

Seersucker Pants

Seesucker Pants

slouchy shirt
pants
cross shoes
tote bag
jewelry
jewelry
Earrings

If you read Sunday's post then you know that I love me some eyelet. Well, I also love me some seersucker. These pants from Lands End Canvas are so sweet (even sweeter if you roll them). Did you notice how I broke those old fashion rules and put a floral shoe with the striped pants? You can do it girls, you really can!  You could also throw on a statement necklace with this look, but I was feeling a little more minimalistic and decided to keep it simple.  Sometimes simple is better.

Black and White for Spring

Black and White for Spring

short sleeve shirt
eyelet shorts
Stella & Dot stella dot necklace

Black and white are hot, hot, hot for Spring.  Not to mention eyelet and peplum, so why not combine all three?!  I love the look of eyelet shorts, eyelet anything, really. I've been on the hunt for a pair of eyelet shorts for  myself, acutally.  I've tried on a few pairs (not this one from Macy's, though) but haven't found just the right ones, yet.  I also continue to search high and low for a peplum top, but again, I'm kind of fussy, and the fit has be to just perfect. So far I have struck out.  Peplum can be tricky, so it needs to be well tailored and hit at just the right spot to be flatting.  If you don't have curves, no problemo, you're a shoe in.  But, if you do, proceed with caution!

The moral of the story is, we all have issues finding to clothes to fit well. But, don't settle girls! Otherwise, that piece will end up on the item you wore a couple times, but don't love list and the next time I come for a consult we'll be looking at that piece saying it's time to go! =)

Plus Size for Spring

Plus Size for Spring

scoop neck dress
blazer
metallic shoes
summer handbag
chandelier earrings
leopard jewelry

Plus size gals, no need to be afraid of a dress with a waist! This is a great way to give your body definition and shape.  Baggy, loose clothing quite often just makes you look bigger.  It's all about learning to dress your body shape.  Not sure what your body shape is and what types of clothing looks best on you?  I'm here to help, that's my specialty! Email at kate@steenwykbuilders.com to schedule a consult.

Also, don't forget that Mother's Day is right around the corner.  Real Life. Real Style gift certificates are the perfect gift for yourself or that special mom in your life. You can purchase a one hour wardrobe consult, a day of personal shopping or anything in between.  I'll deliver it right to your door, gift wrapped and all.

Navy, Lavender & Kicks

Navy, Lavender & Kicks

Boden
skinny fit jeans
Keds
bangle
sunglasses
Stella & Dot

The weather here in West Michigan is proving very difficult to dress for Spring!  I'm totally over wearing boots, but my toes turn into icicles when I wear flats (not to mention sopping wet from all the rain we've been having).  A fun pair of kicks, like these polka dot Keds is the perfect solution!  I'm a sucker for a pair of Keds and there sure are some cute ones out this Spring.  Taylor Swift has an adorable line of her own over at Kohl's and you can find plenty of knock offs that are equally adorable, at half the price. Think Target!   =)

I hope you all have something fun planned for the weekend.  It's going to be cold and dreary in my neck of the woods, but we'll make the best of it.  Spring will come sooner or later!

Spring is here, time to take a risk and add some color to your wardrobe!  Don't be shy, I promise they won't bite.  Experiment a little with mixing and matching colors, like this color block sweater from Target and pink skinny jeans from Gap. Anchor it with neutral accessories and you'll be looking totally cool this Spring.

Spring Dress Fun

Spring Dress Fun

capped sleeve dress
V neck cardigan
bright wedge
Tote bag

This week I decided that I am officially over winter.  I packed away all my boots, reorganized my closet from winter to spring/summer and today went without socks.  I'm done, over it, time to move on.  It's Spring, despite what the weather is outside.

Here's a super fun dress from one of my favorite catalog retailers, Boden.  They're based out of England, and I love pretty much everything in their catalog.

Have a blessed Easter weekend, everyone!  He lives!

Spring Work Wear

Spring Work Wear

ankle length pants
wedge heels
bracelet watch
jewelry

I was shopping with a client recently who is a young professional mom.  She felt like she was still dressing like she did when she was in high school, and was stuck in the Juniors department. Sound familiar anyone? She wanted to look professional, but also young and fun.  A big must on her list (and mine too) was to have pieces that she could also wear on the weekend.   This outfit is an example of the types of pieces we bought for her.  Classic, but updated dress pants in a skinny, ankle version for spring.  Paired with a fun, retro blouse that will also be perfect with dark ankle jeans and wedge sandals for date night.  Don't forget those linen wedges, remember you don't have to be matchy, matchy girls.  Mixing prints is much more hip and cool.
